Summer Course:
Title: “Global Topics at a time of Leadership Change throughout the World”
Instructor: Mr. Stephen Maczynski, Georgetown Preparatory School
This past year has seen a clear leadership shift within the global arena. The 2016 U.S. Presidential election and the emergence of Donald Trump has called into question the allegiances and alliances within the existing world order. President Trump and Putin vacillate between closeness and conflict on a myriad of hot button issues. North Korea continues its aggressive build-up of nuclear armaments, and right-wing candidates and parties in Europe continue to compete for dominance. The United States and Russia are at odds over Syria, and the Peoples’ Republic of China maintains an aggressive posture over island territories in the Pacific Ocean.
The two-week course (August 7-18) will continue to examine each of these developments. Coverage is also given to the direct impact on Taiwan as the island nation continues to forge its own economic and diplomatic alliances. News footage is continually integrated into daily presentations so that the material will come alive. There is ample opportunity to expand upon speaking and writing skills in English. Specific attention is given to an interactive classroom environment so that the students connect with the material.
All assessments are administered during classroom time. An emphasis is placed upon full classroom participation.
